Benefits of playing TTRPGs

I want to kick off this blog with a topic that I feel really passionate about. It’s a topic that I think is both hugely important and highly underrated about gaming in general - the benefits of playing games and what game-playing can bring to your life, beyond the simple pleasure we get from having fun with friends or family.

So here we go - below are just a few simple examples of some of the associated benefits of playing TTRPGs that I came up with. And believe me this list will continue to grow in future posts!

Games encourage creativity and imagination

Every TTRPG requires players to create characters and backstories, and they use their imaginations to visualize the world in which their characters exist. Additionally, TTRPGs often require players to solve problems creatively, which can inspire out of the box thinking and unique solutions.

Games promote social interaction

TTRPGs are a social activity that require players to work together to achieve common goals. This type of collaboration by it’s nature promotes social interaction and helps players develop communication skills. Players must discuss, negotiate, and compromise to achieve their objectives. This type of social interaction can be especially beneficial for individuals who struggle with social anxiety or find it challenging to interact with others.

Games enhance critical thinking skills

TTRPGs require players to think critically to solve problems and make decisions. Players must weigh the pros and cons of different choices and consider the potential consequences of their actions. This type of critical thinking is completely transferrable to other areas of life, such as work, school, and personal relationships.

Games can foster a sense of community

TTRPGs often create a sense of community among players. Players bond over shared experiences, develop inside jokes, and form lasting friendships. In a work environment where teamwork is important this kind of camaraderie can make all the difference.

Games can provides a safe space for personal exploration

When developing their characters, players can experiment with different aspects of their personalities or try out new behaviours without fear of real-world consequences. This type of exploration can be empowering and can help individuals develop a better understanding of themselves.

Games helps with emotional regulation

Similarly, players can use their characters to explore different emotional experiences, such as grief, anger, or fear. By exploring these emotions in a controlled environment, players may be better equipped to manage similar emotions in their daily lives.

While this list is merely scratching the surface of the advantages of delving into the world of roleplaying games, I hope it at least starts to highlight some often-overlooked benefits. Whether you are a seasoned player or a beginner, TTRPGs are a great way to explore new worlds, meet new people, and improve your personal and social skills.
